    James Island Elementary School Book Club - James Island Elementary students participated in their very first Book Club. Students in grades 2-5 were assigned a certain number of South Carolina Award Books to read (picture and chapter books) and today they had a Book Club Party complete with a game truck, pizza party, grab bags, and free books!     The Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival exposes attendees to a wide selection of sweetgrass baskets and merchandise, as well as opportunities to engage in hands-on sweetgrass basket making demonstrations. 
Local artists and crafters will showcase handmade quilts, Gullah dolls, and various handmade art works for sale. Entertainment will consist of local singers, gospel groups, storytellers, praise dancers, and much more.The festival activities and events are designed to provide a family fun environment where children can enjoy face painting, water slides, jump castles and various educational arts and crafts projects. Delicious Lowcountry foods and drinks will be provided by local food vendors and restaurants for purchase. Bring the family and plan to spend the day for a Gullah Geechee good time. Free admission and parking. The Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Association is sponsored in part by the S.C. Arts Commission and the Town of Mount Pleasant.

    This week’s #WCW goes out to Malinda Terry! Malinda was recently confirmed by the S.C. Senate and appointed by Governor McMaster to serve on the Juvenile Parole Board. In her day job, she is the Executive Assistant to the CFO of Charleston County and her passion is advocating for mental health. She's a volunteer with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), a Mental Health First Aid Trainer and a board member of the Charleston/Dorchester Mental Health Center.     Our final Black History Month speaker was JICHS Alumna Daniasha White.  
Daniasha White, MSA is a native of Charleston, SC where she currently resides in the DMV area. She was a 2006 James Island Charter High School graduate and is the daughter of our own Coach Yvonne White.  
After graduation, she attended and graduated from The University of South Carolina in 2011 with a major in accounting. She currently has her master's in accounting and is pursuing a doctorate degree in leadership of business administration. FaceBook Posts of The Week
